Climbing mountains is super exciting! But it’s not just about being brave. It would help if you were smart too, especially when it comes to staying healthy. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a condition that can affect individuals who ascend to high altitudes, typically above 8,000 feet (about 2,400 meters), too quickly. That’s where knowing about mountain sickness comes in. It’s like picking the right shoes for your hike – essential!

Let’s talk about the early signs of mountain sickness. Understanding these signs will help you conquer the climb safely and have a great adventure.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), a condition incited by changes in altitude, frequently manifests in inconspicuous ways, catching trekkers off guard. Recognizing these unexpected symptoms is crucial for ensuring a safe and enjoyable mountain experience. Symptoms of AMS can range from mild to severe and may include headache, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, and difficulty sleeping. In severe cases, AMS can progress to more serious conditions like High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) or High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), which can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.

Let’s delve into five surprising signs that may indicate AMS, shedding light on the lesser-known facets of this condition.

1. Gastric Distress: The Stealthy Indicator

Among the covert indicators of AMS lies gastric distress, they are appearing as indigestion or diarrhea. Many trekkers attribute these symptoms to dietary mishaps rather than altitude-related issues. However, gastrointestinal discomfort often heralds the onset of AMS, prompting travelers to heed the warning signs and take necessary precautions.

2. Nausea: The Silent Alarm

Nausea, often disregarded until it escalates into vomiting, is another subtle symptom of AMS. Trekkers experiencing queasiness may dismiss it as transient discomfort, oblivious to its significance. Acknowledging nausea as a potential sign of AMS enables early intervention, forestalling further escalation of the condition.

3. Insomnia: The Underestimated Red Flag

Sleeplessness amidst the tranquillity of the mountains may seem benign, attributed to unfamiliar sleeping arrangements. However, persistent insomnia, coupled with restlessness, could indicate AMS lurking beneath the surface. Recognizing sleep disturbances as a precursor to AMS allows trekkers to address the issue promptly, safeguarding their well-being.

4. Fatigue: The Deceptive Downturn

Unexpected fatigue, particularly among seasoned trekkers accustomed to physical exertion, warrants attention as a possible symptom of AMS. Despite adequate rest and nutrition, unexplained exhaustion may signal underlying altitude-related issues. Acknowledging fatigue as a potential precursor to AMS prompts proactive measures, averting possible complications.

5. Restlessness: The Subtle Unease

A sense of restlessness or unease, challenging to articulate yet palpable, often accompanies the onset of AMS. Trekkers may struggle to express their discomfort, dismissing it as transient unease. However, recognizing restlessness as a subtle indicator of AMS prompts vigilance, ensuring timely intervention and mitigating risks.

Additional Insights for Altitude Sickness

Understanding the Impact of Altitude on Menstrual Cycles

Altitude changes can affect menstrual cycles, potentially causing irregularities in timing and flow. Individuals need to be aware of these potential changes and plan accordingly to manage their menstrual health effectively during mountain treks.

Medication and Intervention Strategies for Mountain Sickness

Predicting who will fall ill from AMS can be challenging. However, individuals with a history of AMS or those ascending rapidly to high altitudes are at heightened risk. Implementing preventive measures such as gradual ascent and acclimatization strategies can help diminish the likelihood of AMS. For the treatment and prevention of acute altitude illness like AMS, medications such as Acetazolamide (Diamox) and Dexamethasone are commonly employed.

Acetazolamide facilitates acclimatization by augmenting ventilation, while dexamethasone mitigates the increase in pulmonary pressure at high altitudes. However, The most effective way to prevent AMS is through gradual acclimatization, staying properly hydrated, eating high-carbohydrate food, enough sleep, avoiding alcohol, and certain medications that can exacerbate symptoms, and descending to lower altitudes if symptoms become severe.

Sleep and eat, Altitude Mountain Sickness you can beat.

Supplemental oxygen can alleviate AMS symptoms and prevent complications, especially in severe cases or when immediate descent is not possible. However, consult with a healthcare professional before embarking on high-altitude adventures to discuss personalized preventive measures and medication plans tailored to individual needs.

Navigating the mountainscape encompasses more than conquering peaks; it necessitates vigilance and awareness of hidden hazards like AMS. By unraveling the subtle signs of mountain sickness and implementing preventive measures, trekkers empower themselves to respond effectively, safeguarding their health amidst nature’s grandeur.

Remember, in mountain adventures, comprehending the nuances of AMS could make all the difference between a memorable journey and an unforeseen ordeal.

Exploring the majestic mountains offers adventurers unmatched opportunities to seize captivating moments and preserve the mesmerizing beauty of nature. Yet, capturing the enchanting allure of mountain landscapes demands more than just a keen eye; it requires the right gear to authentically capture these landscapes’ essence. Whether you’re a professional photographer or just starting. With the right photography gear for trekkers, including cameras, lenses, tripods, and other essential accessories. You can unlock the full potential of your adventures and immortalize the breathtaking scenery that awaits you. Having the knowledge of necessary tools during hiking can significantly enhance your photographic journey.

Here, we’ll delve into the essential gear for trekkers venturing into the mountains, ensuring they can encapsulate the enchantment of these natural wonders.

Trekker’s Camera Gear Checklist:

This comprehensive guide provides valuable insights into selecting the right photography gear for trekkers, ensuring you’re well-equipped to capture stunning images during your outdoor adventures. Here’s a breakdown of the key points covered:

1. Optimal Camera Equipment for Hiking and Trekking

Your camera is your principal instrument for immortalizing the breathtaking vistas and tranquil landscapes encountered during your trek. Consider a sturdy DSLR, a versatile mirrorless camera, or a compact point-and-shoot tailored to your preferences and budgetary constraints.

Lightweight Photography Equipment for Trekkers:

Choose lightweight and compact gear options to minimize your weight during your trek. For example-

Lenses: Selecting the right lenses is crucial for capturing diverse perspectives and compositions. Pack a versatile zoom lens, such as the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II, for capturing wide-angle landscapes and intimate details. Additionally, bring along a telephoto lens like the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II to zoom in on distant subjects and isolate elements within the scene. Don’t forget to include a wide-angle lens, such as the Canon EF 16–35mm f/2.8L II. For capturing expansive vistas and epic landscapes.

Tripod: Stability is essential for capturing sharp, clear images, especially in low-light conditions or shooting long exposures. Invest in a sturdy, lightweight tripod like the MeFoto Globe Trotter or the Sirui T-25SK T-0S Series. Travel Tripod to provide the support you need while trekking through rugged terrain.

Filters: Filters are invaluable tools for enhancing the quality and versatility of your photographs, allowing you to control exposure, reduce glare, and enhance colors. Neutral density (ND) filters like the Tiffen 0.6 and 0.9 stop ND filters are ideal for balancing exposure in bright conditions or achieving long-exposure effects. Such as silky waterfalls or blurred clouds. Circular polarizers like the B+W Circular Polarizer are excellent for cutting glare on water surfaces and saturating colors, adding vibrancy to your mountain scenes.

Must-Have Photography Accessories for Mountain Hikes:

Invest in essential accessories like memory cards, and spare batteries. And lens cleaning kits to ensure you’re prepared for any situation on the trail. Consider portable lighting options and smartphone photography accessories for added versatility.

Affordable Photography Gear for Trekkers on a Budget

You don’t need to break the bank to enjoy quality photography gear for your trek. Look for budget-friendly options and consider renting equipment on a tight budget. Focus on investing in essential items to enhance your photography experience without draining your finances.

Waterproof Camera Gear for Trekking in Rainy Conditions: Protect your gear from the elements with waterproof camera bags, rain covers, and dry sacks. Opt for weather-sealed camera bodies and lenses to ensure your equipment remains safe and functional even in rainy or snowy conditions.

Capturing the Peaks: My Journey with High Altitude Photography:

During my recent high-altitude trek, I encountered photography gear challenges that provided valuable insights. Investing in high-quality ND (neutral density) and CPL (circular polarizer) filters. Ranging from at least 500 to ND2000, proved essential in combating overexposure and glare for better image and video quality. Utilizing a Sigma 18-50mm lens underscored the necessity of a robust zoom lens, but a zoom lens is preferable if you have one. For capturing stable footage in windy conditions a better quality easy-to-carry tripod is essential.

I’m capturing ever-lasting memories of my Everest Base Camp(EBC) trekking journey at the UNESCO World Heritage site, Patan Durbar Square.

For beginners or professional videographers, I recommend the Sony ZV-E10 camera. Selecting action cameras with sensors larger than 1 inch is paramount for maintaining image and video quality in low-light situations. But make sure you use ND filters in high exposure. Opting for reputable brands like K&F Concept ensures access to quality ND filters and accessories.

Smartphone Photography Tips for Mountain Adventures

Harness the power of your smartphone camera with remote shooting apps and editing tools. Use your smartphone as a secondary camera or backup device, and experiment with different shooting techniques to capture unique perspectives and compositions.

Packing Photography Gear for Long-Distance Treks

Pack your photography gear strategically to optimize space and weight distribution in your backpack.

Use padded camera inserts

Lens pouches

Camera hood

Dividers protect your equipment and it will keep everything organized during your trek.

Editing Your Mountain Photos for Stunning Results

Enhance your mountain photos with post-processing software and editing techniques. Experiment with color correction, exposure adjustments, and creative filters to bring out the best in your images and create stunning visual narratives of your trekking adventures.

By following this trekker’s photography gear checklist and incorporating these essential items into your kit, you’ll be well-equipped to capture the magic of the mountains and create lasting memories of your outdoor adventures. Whether you’re trekking through rugged terrain or scaling lofty peaks, let your photography gear be your guide as you explore the untamed wilderness and immerse yourself in the beauty of the natural world.

Local Bus or Songthaew: Upon reaching Phitsanulok, take a local bus or Songthaew (shared taxi truck) to Ban Mung district. These options provide an authentic local experience.

Taxi or Grab: For a more private and direct journey, consider taking a taxi or using the Grab app, a popular ride-sharing service in Thailand.

Booking and Costs for Khao Long Ruea Ta Muen:

Preparation is key for this adventure. Booking in advance through the dedicated Facebook group “พิชิตยอดเขาล่องเรือตาหมื่นอัญมณีแห่งบ้านมุง” is recommended. The 2300 THB per person cost covers the national park entry fee, a knowledgeable guide, a night’s stay at the summit, camping gear, climbing gloves, a helmet, refreshing towels, and meals for dinner and breakfast. Porter services are available at 60 THB per 1kg extra.

Running shoes are not suitable for trekking. However, hiking shoes are built for climbing mountains, even in extreme terrain. Where sports shoes are built for daily activities.
By the end of this discussion, you’ll clearly understand which shoes are best suited for your trekking needs.

Hiking Shoes vs. Sports Shoes: A Comprehensive Analysis

Most of the people think sports shoes can save them on hiking. But here we are going to break that myth. Knowing about hiking boots or trail running shoes will make your trekking more easy. Upon initial inspection, trekking shoes exhibit a robust and sturdy appearance. They appear heavier, giving an impression of enhanced foot protection and durability.

In contrast, running shoes seem designed specifically for running, lacking the ruggedness required for challenging terrains. Let’s delve deeper into the details of these shoes to unravel their suitability for different trekking scenarios.

Grip: Tackling Varied Terrains

This picture is showing grip details of running shoes and hiking shoes.

Trekking Shoes – Excellent Grip

Hiking boots boast deep grooves on the sole’s exterior, ensuring a solid grip on diverse surfaces. During a trek, these grooves are invaluable when traversing loose mud, soil, boulders, snow, and ice. The detailed sole design is tailored for optimal traction in rough terrains.

Running Shoes – Flat Soles

Conversely, running shoes feature flatter soles without deep grooves. These are crafted for flatter terrains like tar roads, cement, or mud roads, where robust grip requirements are less pronounced. Assessing the grip of your chosen shoes is crucial, aligning it with the demands of your trek.

Ankle Support: Navigating Rough Terrains

Side-by-side comparison between trekking boots and running shoes.

Hiking Shoes – Minimizing Ankle Injuries in Challenging Terrains

The best quality of trekking shoes is to excel in ankle support, covering almost the entire ankle and restricting movement. It’s designed to prevent ankle twists, which is crucial when navigating uneven terrains during ascents or descents. A twisted ankle could prematurely end your trek, making ankle support a vital consideration.

Running Shoes – Flexible, No Ankle Support

Running shoes, in contrast, lack ankle support, with the shoe’s upper part ending just below the ankles. This design prioritizes flexibility for running or walking, allowing unrestricted ankle movement. However, it also means diminished protection against ankle twists or sprains.

Sole – Thickness and Hardness: Balancing Stability and Flexibility

Trekking Shoes – Thick and Hard Enough

Hiking boots have thick soles, essential for extended Himalayan treks, providing insulation and padding. The sole’s hardness is critical; it shouldn’t be too rigid, impeding natural foot movement, nor too soft, risking collapse under body and backpack weight. Testing sole hardness with a simple tap helps determine the ideal balance.

Running Shoes – Flexible and Cushioned

In contrast, running shoes have less sturdy and thick soles but offer flexibility and cushioning. The sound produced by tapping the sole reflects the additional cushioning, making them less suitable for carrying extended weight during consecutive days of trekking.

Make your regular life easy with suitable running or sports shoes by Sprint.

Water Resistance: Confronting Wet Conditions

Trekking Shoes – Keep Feet Dry

Given the unpredictable conditions of a Himalayan trek, water resistance is paramount. Most trekking shoes have a water-resistant coating and a waterproof membrane, ensuring dry and warm feet even in snow or rain.

Running Shoes – Zero Water Resistance

Conversely, running shoes lack any water-resistant features. Stepping into puddles or potholes could result in wet feet, presenting a significant disadvantage during a trek. Water resistance is a crucial consideration, especially in unpredictable and wet terrains.

Few Things to Keep in Mind about Trekking Shoes

This picture shows the details features of trekking shoes.

Heavier

Trekking shoes are notably heavier than running shoes. Weighing around 500 grams per heavier than running shoes. Weighing around 500 grams per shoe, or approximately 1 kg for a pair, they provide the necessary support for the body and backpack weight during an extended Himalayan trek.

Longer Break-In Period

Hiking shoes require a more extended break-in period compared to running shoes. The sturdier construction necessitates approximately two weeks of use to conform to the foot’s shape and movement. Purchasing hiking shoes well before the trek ensures ample time for this break-in process.

Socks – The Unsung Heroes

Choosing the right socks is as crucial as selecting the appropriate footwear. Opt for wool socks that are tough and dry quickly. In sloppy wet conditions, waterproof socks can be a game-changer. Different sock weights provide varying levels of warmth, with thinner options recommended for hot weather.

Remember that heavier socks may fit tighter, potentially causing blisters due to increased friction.

My Personal Preference

Picture showing which trekking shoes Israt Eshu chose for her EBC journey.

During my trekking period I choose the Trek 100 by Forclaz from Decathlon. I have found it a very good companion in my trekking journey. Though everyone has different preferences. So I suggest you do your own research and choose what is best for you.

When Running Shoes Shine Bright?

Beyond the detailed points above, the choice between hiking boots and running shoes depends on the nature of your trek. Running shoes may suffice for short, well-defined hikes with neatly laid-out trails and minimal challenging terrain. This holds particularly true for non-Himalayan treks in Sahyadris or Eastern Ghats.

However, investing in reliable hiking boots is imperative for extended Himalayan treks involving varied terrains and gradients over six to seven days. Consider your trek’s specifics and make an informed decision to ensure the well-being of your feet during the journey.

The mighty Himalayas, home to some of the world’s highest peaks like Annapurna Base Camp Trek(ABC), Everest Base Camp Trek(EBC), Goechala Trek, Kedarkantha Trek, treks in the Himalayas, etc. Which offer breathtaking landscapes and unparalleled trekking experiences.

As 2024 unfolds, adventure enthusiasts are gearing up for new explorations in this majestic mountain range. Here are some must-do treks in the Himalayas that should be on every trekker’s list for the year.

1. On Top of the World: Conquering the Everest Base Camp Trek Challenge

Duration: 12to 18 Days

Difficulty level: Moderate

Region: Khumbu region of Nepal

Best time to do the EBC Trek: Feb-May, Late Sep-Nov

Temperatures: 22 degrees to -5 degrees Celsius

Altitude: 5,364 m (17,598 ft)

This is one of the most popular and challenging treks in the Himalayas, as it takes you to the base camp of the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest. The trek starts from Lukla, a short flight from Kathmandu, and takes about 12 to 14 days to complete.

An adventurous Bangladeshi women standing with the flag of Bangladesh on top of Everest Base Camp (EBC).

The trek’s highest point is Kala Patthar, at 5600 meters, where you can get a close-up view of Everest and other mountains. You will also experience the Sherpa culture, visit ancient monasteries, and enjoy breathtaking views of the Himalayan peaks, glaciers, and valleys.

As for the Everest Base Camp treks in the Himalayas, there is no fixed price. The journey would cost anywhere between $2099 to $4500, depending on various things and personal preferences. For details, you can watch the video below for more ideas about Nepal at the lowest budget.

2. Embracing Nature: Beginners-Friendly Deoban treks in the Himalayas for Busy Bees

Duration: 2 Days

Difficulty level: Moderate

Region: Garhwal

Best time to choose: March to June and September to November

Altitude: 9,000 feet (2,743 meters)

The base camp for the Deoban weekend trek is Chakrata. Chakrata is less than 330 km from Delhi. It is just a night train away. The trek is 15 km long. It is a wonderful weekend trek to do in October, November, and December as well.

In post-December, there is too much snow on the trails. However, in post-winter, people go on treks in the Himalayas in March and April.

Whether you’re a novice trekker or an experienced adventurer looking for a quick escape. Deoban promises a weekend getaway that rejuvenates the mind and soul. It could be the best expedition in the Himalayas for beginners.

In just two days, what the Deoban trek offers is equal in comparison to other longer Himalayan treks. In other words, you will enjoy the stunning views of mountain peaks, a beautiful forest section with a thick canopy, unending green meadows, and easy access.

3. Dayara Bugyal- Explore the Alpine Splendor of Uttarakhand

Difficulty: Easy-Moderate

Duration: 6 days

Best time to visit: January, February, March, April, May, June, September, October, November, December

Mountaineers are preparing camp at Dayra Bugyal meadows.

Very few trekkers have set foot on the Dayara Bugyal trek, even though it is close to the Gangotri region. Dayara Bugyal is one of those off-beat treks which takes your breath away! As a result, it is rewarding for very little effort.

The vast meadows, beautiful campsites, and verdant landscape views make Dayara Bugyal an ideal summer trek. Especially if there are kids aged seven years and above. Because it makes for a perfect family trek, just like the Phulara Ridge trek.

4. Mukta Top Trek: A Himalayan Gem Unveiled

Duration: 6 Days

Difficulty level: Moderate

Region: Garhwal Himalayas

Best time to choose: May to June, September to October

Altitude: 11,838 feet (3,608 meters)

The Mukta Top trek is fairly newer in the Himalayas. It is located about 430 km from Delhi. During winter, that is, December through mid-March, the temperature can reach -5 degrees Celsius.

In summer, from March to June, the temperature is around 12-13 degrees during the day and negative temperatures at night. The entire trek distance is 28 km. This trek has enchanting forests, amazing mountain views, and a thrilling summit climb.

Above all, the warm hospitality of the locals and their unique customs and architecture add a cultural dimension to the trekking experience. Another bonus on this trek is that they are often isolated. As a result, you can enjoy the bliss of solitude.

5. Brahmatal Trail: Mystical Encounters Beyond the Ordinary

Duration:6 Days

Difficulty level:

Region:

Best time to do the Brahmatal Trek:

Temperatures:

Altitude:

A solo treks in the Himalayas standing into the leap of the Brahmatal mountain.

Brahmatal is a great trek to do solo as well. There is a lot of snow on the trail in December, January, and February. The treks run until the beginning of March.

6. Phulara Ridge Trek: Scenic Odyssey Through Alpine Wonderland of Himalayas

Difficulty: Moderate

The Phulara Ridge trek is great to do in September, October, November, May, and June. It is a unique ridge trek in India and one of the newer treks. It was discovered by Indiahikes in 2017. The beautiful Pushtara meadows are another reason why every trekker must do this trek.

Furthermore, the Phulara Ridge trek has a beautiful dense forest section for a short duration of treks in the Himalayas. If you are a wildlife or bird lover, this is the trek for you. Although we have spotted over ten species of Himalayan birds on this trek.

The cultural encounters — in the early part of the trek, you pass through ancient wooden villages that still stand the same despite being many centuries old. The stories of vibrant festivals and legends of these villages dating back to the mythologies will satisfy your thirst for knowledge. Later, the astounding scenery changes every day can leave anyone breathless.

There are many reasons why it is a very popular trek in the Indian Himalayas. The most important of them is this — the summit climb.

The summit climb of Kedarkantha is a very rewarding one. Right from the base camp of the trek, the summit looms large. As you start your trek in the early morning hours and steadily climb the steep slope, the world surrounds you.

The climb is very challenging. The entire stretch is steadily steep. As you get closer to the summit, it gets tricky as well. However, the big mountains of the upper Himalayas keep you company until you finally reach the summit.

As you stretch yourself and take in the views of the Himalayas from the summit, you feel a strong sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. This is an unparalleled feeling.

Few treks offer the same adventure, making it popular among beginners for its finest summit climb.

Region:

Best time to do the Beas Kund Trek: June, July, and August

The Beas Kund Trek is approximately 550 km from Delhi – a night’s journey away. For a Himalayan trek to be this close to a city, it’s a blessing in disguise for trekkers.

Post-summer, mid-June, July, and August are great times to do the Beas Kund Trek. Also, the temperature during this time of the year is around 18-20 degrees. Furthermore, the day at lower campsites and about 5-6 degrees at higher campsites. Therefore, you can expect the temperature to reach 1-2 degrees at night.

Thus, it is a great trek for first-time, seasoned and trekkers who wish to trek solo.

13. Gidara Bugyal: Peaceful Meadows Amidst Nature’s Embrace

Difficulty: Moderate – Difficult

Duration: 8 days

Best time to visit: June, September

Gidara Bugyal is an ancient, pristine meadow known in trekking circles. It is one of the largest high-altitude meadows you will set foot on. It is larger than its twin Dayara Bugyal. Possibly larger than the twin meadows of Ali and Bedni Bugyal as well. It takes at least two days to traverse! Sounds challenging?

Even though it is known in the trekking circles, Gidara is extremely secluded. Therefore very few people trek in these meadows. The only signs of civilization you will likely spot are the shepherds and their settlements around your first campsite, Rikoda. You may see a mountain dog or two. But you will likely be the only group trekking and camping in these meadows!

If you are a snow trekker, which month should you choose? December is a popular choice for experiencing the benefits of trekking. But my answer may leave you shocked. If you want to do the best winter trek in snow, avoid the month of December.

Choose January and February instead because January and February bring out several unseen benefits of the Himalayan Treks.

Many trekkers raise their eyebrows after hearing this advice.

For many people, the snow is the best time to go on a trip in December! And I get why. That’s when they have their holidays. Their kids are off school for Christmas and New Year’s. They may want to use up their remaining vacation days before the year ends. But they overlocked the benefits of trekking in January or February.

On another point, hikers often think of December as the same as winter. Not many people even consider January and February as part of winter.” So, in this article, we’ll explore the advantages of trekking in winter compared to the usual choice of December. This is something only a few people talk about. Let’s dive right in:”

Crowded Trekking Trails: Disturb the Snowy High-Altitude Adventure

Research found that more hikers head to the mountains in December compared to the usual snowy season!

The graph above displays a significant increase in crowds during December, followed by a substantial decrease in January and February. This data covers four years.

The downside of trekking in December is the most unfortunate aspect!

It takes away all the enjoyment and peacefulness of trekking in the Himalayas. Loud music plays on speakers in places where it should be quiet and calm. Instead of peaceful nights, there are campfires, drinking, and noisy behavior. Campsites are stretched thin on resources — room, water, and bathrooms (campsites often turn into areas filled with human waste).

Besides that, December brings its own set of challenges. (1) Airplane tickets cost a lot during this period (even if you reserve them early). (2) Hotels charge nearly twice their usual price (if any rooms are available).

But if it’s a climb to the top, many people are there. They line up and wait long, and hundreds of people stand at the top. I can’t imagine what that summit experience is like!

The Big Snow Season: Why trekkers must shift focus to Jan-Feb

The many people in December might discourage any careful trekker, but the main reason for trekking in January or February is different. January and February (until mid-March) are the real heavy snow months for the full benefits of trekking. It’s not December. December is just the start of winter. It’s when the first snow of winter arrives. But that’s just the beginning.

The real winter arrives only in January and February in their area, covering all Himalayan treks with a thick layer of snow. January and February are the “Big Snow Season” at Mellow’s Life.

A weather expert, Akshay Deoras, has been forecasting for 12 years. “What we consider early winter (October-December) is officially considered post-monsoon. Only January and February are officially seen as winter,” he explained.

This is where I want to stress my advice to you. Many of us head to the mountains in winter to escape the city’s noise and chaos or trek in a beautiful snowy landscape. And there’s no better time than the Big Snow Season to experience this. Here’s why:

1. There’s more snow deposit: Crisp and Clear Views compared to December

In India, winter snow arrives from the west, brought by western disturbances. Usually, there’s just one wave of this in December, but during the Big Snow Season, which is from January to February, there are at least 2-3 waves. These waves are more robust, bringing more snow until April ends.

Picture by Israt Eshu shot on Khumbu Glacier.

The snow during January and February, the Big Snow Season, is the deepest on all treks. This snow is what makes your snowy experience genuinely authentic. From the beginning of your trek, you’ll find yourself in enchanting snowy scenes. The forest trees are covered with snow, creating a fairy-tale-like atmosphere. You’ll see vast white blankets covering meadows and clearings as you go higher. The ground beneath your feet feels like soft powder. Our camps are usually set up right amid all this snow.

Most of the winter photos you see from Himalayan treks are taken during this Big Snow Season, not in December!

2. Greater chances of Snowfall: Challenging Yet Invigorating Weather

More WDs mean more chances of snowfall. I know this is what trekkers dream about experiencing! So, if you want an exciting snowy adventure with a good chance of snowfall, the Big Snow Season is your best bet.

Some of you might worry about the thick snow making it hard to finish your trek. But I’ve seen that having an excellent technical team with you is vital to finishing strong. Now’s the perfect time to get going.

3. Unique Flora and Fauna: Discovering the Fascinating Plant Life of January and February

Trekking in January and February unveils a different side of nature, characterized by unique flora and fauna that thrive in colder climates. From spotting elusive wildlife to marveling at winter blooms, these months offer a diverse array of natural wonders waiting to be discovered.

Keep an eye out for seasonal surprises such as frost-kissed foliage, icicle formations, and the occasional sighting of elusive snow creatures, adding an extra enchantment to your trekking experience.

4. Cultural Encounters: Experience Traditional Winter Celebrations

Going on hikes in January and February lets you dive into the customs and traditions of the local community. Unlike the peak tourist season of December, you’ll have more opportunities to interact with communities, gaining insights into their way of life and customs. Whether sharing warm tea with villagers or participating in traditional winter festivals, these cultural encounters enrich your trekking journey and create lasting memories.

5. Enhanced Photography Opportunities: Capturing Winter’s Majestic Beauty

The winter months offer photographers a unique canvas to capture stunning landscapes bathed in soft light and crisp air. From dramatic sunrises and sunsets to glistening frost-covered trees, the beauty of nature takes on a magical quality during January and February.

With fewer crowds vying for the perfect shot, you’ll have ample opportunities to unleash your creativity and capture the essence of winter wilderness in all its glory.

In conclusion, while December may be the go-to month for trekking enthusiasts, venturing out in January and February unveils a treasure trove of hidden benefits of trekking. From tranquil trails and favorable weather to unique wildlife sightings and cultural experiences, these months offer distinctively rewarding benefits of trekking.
