When people picture Hong Kong, they imagine a skyline of glass towers and neon-lit streets. But step beyond the city and you’ll find something most travellers never see: lush jungle, hidden waterfalls and rolling green mountains. At the centre of it all stands Tai Mo Shan, the highest peak in Hong Kong at 957 metres.
Tucked into the New Territories, Tai Mo Shan is an extinct volcano whose name means Big Hat Mountain, a nod to the ring of cloud that so often crowns its summit. The trail climbs through misty grassland and country park, and on a clear day the view reaches all the way out over the city and the South China Sea.
Our hike took us first to Hong Kong’s highest jungle waterfall before pushing on toward the summit. It’s a side of Hong Kong we never expected, and proof that real adventure can hide right on the edge of one of the world’s busiest cities.
